Dog Breeds

There are literally hundreds of dog breeds in the world, and with very selective cross breeding, the number of dog breeds is actually going up! There are several reasons for the number of dog breeds currently available, and the most obvious and simple reason is that people meant to do that. The fact is, historically dogs are not pets. Dogs are working animals. They are tools. And a tool that is good for one job is not necessarily going to be appropriate for another. A good hunting dog will have a different set of traits than a dog that is used to guard prisoners, which will be completely different from a dog that is meant to herd animals. These dogs have been selectively bred over the course of centuries in order to promote the desired traits and remove the detrimental ones. A dog breed like a border collie is going to have a very strong herding instinct and is going to need a great deal of daily exercise—at the same time, a border collie will have a mild temperament and will be extremely intelligent and easy to train. A Doberman or a Rottweiler on the other hand will have a more aggressive temperament and will be naturally inclined to protect their home and area.

When you are searching for a canine pet, you might want to research the various dog breeds and decide which type of dog is best for your home and family. If you live in a small home with a small yard and you are gone most of the day, then you don’t want to get any dog breeds that require a lot of exercise, a lot of training, and a lot of attention.
