Diabetic Dog Food

Canine diabetes is a growing problem for many different breeds of dogs. Type 2 diabetes is a life-style disease, just like it is with humans. That means the dog with type 2 diabetes was not born with it, rather, the animal developed it because of a poor diet, because it is overweight, and because it is inactive. All of these factors combine to make the pancreas unable to regulate the blood sugar, which can cause all sorts of problems, and if left untreated, can lead to death. Since the animal probably did not cause his own diabetes, it is imperative for the owners of said animal to maintain a proper, nutritional diet. The consequences can be fatal if the disease is left ignored and improperly treated. So, there are some things that you need to know about diabetic dog food.

First, stick with natural foods as much as possible. Dogs do not need manufactured food to survive! They lived without it for thousands of years. They also don’t need a bunch of carbohydrates. Raw meat, rotting vegetables, and eggs are perfectly fine for the dog. That means that you can feed your diabetic dog table scraps. You can also do easy things like adding an egg to the food, or mixing in a can of raw sardines with a can of wet dog food. Second, avoid dry dog food, if possible. There are types of dry diabetic dog food, but they tend to be organic and so a bit more expensive. You should get dry diabetic dog food from your vet. Also, find dog food that is low in carbohydrates and low in sodium.
